Graypaw scented the forest air in search of prey. The she-cat nosed a lark, and spotted it a moment later. The bird was young and fat; ruffling its feathers and pecking the forest floor for insects. Graypaw crept with her muscles tense, paws sliding over the dirt and leaves. She rose quickly and leaped, but the bird sensed this and flew away as the apprentice hit the ground with a thud. Graypaw huffed inwardly, and looked for her mentor, for guidance.

Swanthroat purred in amusement. "You looked like a lopsided badger!" He padded up to his apprentice and sat, curling his black tail over his white front paws. "You must balance yourself equally on all four of your paws, and don't slide. You rustle leaves if you do that. You must pick up your paws and put them gently back down. And go slowly, Graypaw. I know times are hard right now, but be patient. And you will be rewarded."

The gray she-cat twitched her whiskers, obviously displeased with herself. She nodded, soaking in her mentor's lesson like moss after a rainy day. Swishing her red tail back and forth, she opened her jaws in search of a trace of prey. Her ears perked- a blackbird! Keeping Swanthroat's advice in mind, she slowly lifted her front paw, and the rest followed. As she closed in on her prey, the bird became alarmed and started to fly away. Graypaw was much closer to it this time, so she leaped into the air (again). Her claws clipped the bird's ebony wing, just barely, and fell to the ground. Graypaw killed it swiftly, and, once again, looked at her mentor. An excited shine gleamed in her eyes, but for only a moment. The yellow-green orbs hardened with confusion, disappointment, and a dulled glint of curiosity. "How do you get the bird to not fly away, Swanthroat?" she asked, for it had done it both times.

Swanthroat gave a mrrrrooow of laughter. "Not fly away?" He padded up to the apprentice. "I guess catch it before it does. You can't make it not fly away, thats like asking, how do you make a cat not run from monsters. Just be quick enough so it doesn't fly out of your reach." He touched his nose to his apprentice's head. "Bury that and lets see if we can find any more prey." He opened his mouth to scent, but he got nothing. The black and white tom sighed but padded forward and halted. Mouse? He scented and sure enough. He heard it and saw it nibbling on a seed under a tree root. He balanced his weight on all four of his paws and lowered his body, keeping his tail low. When he was only a tail length before it he pounced. He swiftly killed it with a bite to the neck then buried it. "Lets see if we can catch anymore before heading back to camp." He licked one paw as he waited for his apprentice to scent again in the area.

Graypaw grumbled, irritated with her flying prey. She nodded her head at her mentor's words, knowing that he meant well with his advice. She was still annoyed, though. The stormy she-cat watched her Swanthroat hunting, hoping she could pick up a few techniques. "That's was cool, Swanthroat! Good job!" she mewed, excited. In response to his orders, she opened her mouth, letting the cool forest scent amplify. She slowly crept on the forest floor, dodging crunchy twigs and branches. She halted, abruptly, for she scented- a mouse? A heartbeat later she spotted it, and imitating her mentors, she distributed her weight evenly and crouched. A few pawsteps later, Graypaw pounced, landed, and killed it quickly. She smiled to herself and then looked at Swanthroat.

OOC: yay i have an honorific!! I will call you hazelchan then! if your a girl? hazel-kun if your a boy IC: Swanthroat watched as his apprentice stalked the mouse then almost swiftly killed it. She was still a new apprentice so he was impressed already. The older tom padded up to her and a rumbled purr sounded throughout his body. "Goodjob, Graypaw. I don't think we'll find anymore. This drought is hiding all the prey, lets go back." He flicked his tail for her to follow and picked up his prey.

ooc: hazel-chan :3 imma GRLL. ;D
Graypaw nodded, her eyes glowing with pride. She stopped in front of her buried prey, and looked at the forest with worry. how long is this drought going to last? she thought, examining the land around her. With a small sigh, she picked up her prey and followed her mentor home.

Swanthroat saw worry flash in his apprentice's eyes and sighed. It was to be expected, but it was still sad to see such young cats be worried. When your young is the time to be happy and chase voles and climb trees. Not worry if tomorrow you will die of hunger or not. The tom picked up his prey and headed back to camp.
